Finding Books at Your Child’s Reading Level...
Dear parents, it can be difficult finding that “just right” book for your child. You want one that is not too easy, but not too difficult that they can’t access the print and understand what they’re reading. There are different ways of leveling books for readers. You will see DRA (Developmental Reading Assessment), Lexile (numbered to the 2000L), AR (Accelerated Reader), GLE (Grade Level Equivalent), & F&P (Fountas & Pinnell).
We use the DRA assessment to determine reading levels in La Habra. We have also leveled our books by DRA. We have an entire book room at Arbolita that I put together with Mrs. Cavanagh and Mrs. Egan many years ago. I pull from those books for our guided reading groups in my classroom.
Here are some online resources for you to access & find books at your child’s reading level. You can find these books at the library, bookstores, Amazon, or online free reading too. Just find them for your child to give them the best chance at succeeding at reading!!!
kidsbookseries.com - they have lists of books at each level.
the-best-childrens-books.org - they show pictures of the books along with the title & DRA level - they have links to buy on Amazon too.
scholastic.com - go to Book Wizard - use the filter for DRA level to locate books - Scholastic has great deals on books!
books.atozteacherstuff.com - Leveled Books Database
readinga-z.com - read them ONLINE!!!
There are also many reading applications (apps) - we use “Epic!” here at Arbolita on our iPads. It is an eBook subscription service that offers thousands of high quality books!
Happy Reading!
